BIDDEFORD – PeoplesChoice Credit Union awarded six area students with $1,000 scholarships at its annual member meeting on Sunday, which took place at Biddeford High School’s Little Theater.

“We are beyond thrilled to be able to honor these students for the wonderful work they do both in and out of the classroom,” said PeoplesChoice CEO Luke Labbe. “

Through PeoplesChoice’s Maine Merits Community Scholarship Program, five students were selected to receive the Ray Gagnon Community Service & Leadership Scholarship designed to honor high school seniors and college students in the counties of York, Cumberland, Androscoggin, Aroostook, Franklin, Oxford, Penobscot, Piscataquis or Somerset. This particular scholarship recognizes those often overlooked by traditional awards, celebrating their integrity, respect, and quiet excellence demonstrated through collaboration and a willingness to serve.

Selected for this category were Emily Frechette of Biddeford High School for her distinction on pancreatic cancer fundraising. She plans to attend Marist College; Myles Seckler (Traip Academy/University of Waterloo, Ontario) on encouraging STEM education; Chloe Whitbread (York High School/Duke University) on social justice and environmental advocacy; Kingsley Burch (Cape Elizabeth High School/University of Pennsylvania) on working with youth and elderly; and Leah Cromarty who is currently enrolled at the University of Maine on literacy and inspiring the love of reading.

Additionally, the Technical and Trade Scholarship was awarded to Isaac Delano of Scarborough High School and a student of Portland Arts & Technology High School. This scholarship recognizes a Maine student committed to further training in a technical or trade field, such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, aesthetics, and more. It is awarded to a student accepted into a 2 or 4-year college, an apprenticeship, a post-secondary certificate program, or directly entering the workforce in their chosen trade. Delano was chosen for his work in automotive and he plans to attend Eastern Maine Community College.
